Baby Snoring While Sleeping
As a parent to a newborn, especially first-time parents, you marvel at everything your baby does. When she is asleep, you listen intently to the baby monitor, worry about whether she is warm enough or not and worry about which sleeping position is best – tummy or back? While listening to the monitor, it’s nice if your monitor can pick up your baby’s breathing, but what if your baby is snoring? Should a baby snore? If so, should this be a concern?
Snoring Baby: Noisy Breathing
Babies tend to have noisy breathing when they are sleeping for a number of reasons. The foremost reason is due to their narrow airways. As your baby grows, so will her airway, giving her more room to breathe without causing the soft tissues to vibrate.
A baby snoring may be an early sign of asthma, so you will want to speak with your baby’s doctor about the snoring – how often, how loud, and how long your baby has been snoring.
Of course, a baby snoring may be nothing to be concerned about as she will usually grow out of this phase as she grows. Aside from the airways growing, babies can get easily congested. As a first-time parent, you will soon learn that babies do not know how to breathe from their mouths yet. Therefore, you must keep their nasal passages clear. You can do so in a number of different ways.
Clearing Baby’s Nasal Passages
One way to help with your baby snoring is to use steam or a humidifier. You can get into the shower with your baby and use the steam from the shower to clear her nasal passages. You can also use a humidifier in her room to keep her room at the right moisture level.
Another way to help clear your baby’s nasal passage is to use a saline solution. You can make one at home yourself with salt and water or buy one.
Finally, you can also use a nasal aspirator to help clear your baby’s nasal passage. The nasal aspirator sucks out the mucus or other secretions in your baby’s nose to keep it from being stuffy. An aspirator should help immensely if your baby is extremely congested.
A baby snoring might make you worried, but for the most part, it is just because of their narrow passageways. If you are really concerned about the snoring or your baby snores loud, whatever the case, please have your baby checked by professional practitioner.
